Twenty-five years ago, we all went to the movies with Ariel Horowitz and fell in love with the actress. Since then, Horowitz has managed to establish himself as one of Israel’s original and prolific creators, with eight solo albums (and one novel) alongside songs he wrote for others that have become classics.
In 1998 he was there with the reservists’ protest anthem “Sigal Nachmias” and with the most played song on the radio that year, “Yalla Bye.” In 2000 he wrote and composed for us the song of the year, “Love is Dead,” performed by his wife, singer Tamar Giladi, and in 2001 we fell in love with him in “Rena.”
During the disengagement period, when the argument between us heated up, he planted “Coconut” in Hava Alberstein’s album so that we could relax in the shade. Already in Cast Lead, he felt that the reservists were “cyclamen among the rocks,” and during Protective Edge, he walked with “twenty thousand men” after the coffin of the lone soldier, Shawn Carmeli.
Behind the rock sound typical of his generation and his cynical humor, Horowitz hides the fact that he is, first and foremost, following in the footsteps of his mother, Naomi Shemer – and when he pauses for a moment and summarizes over a generation of creativity, a contemporary Israeli poet emerges before us, singing our story.
